WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals have relied heavily on the home run during their winning streak. On Friday, they sprinkled in three key hits that didnt leave the infield and some sparkling defence. Wilson Ramos homered and drove in three runs, Ross Ohlendorf pitched five innings in place of Stephen Strasburg, and the Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-1 for their seventh straight victory. Four Washington runs came on infield singles and Bryce Harper threw out two Phillies at second base as the Nationals moved within 4 1/2 games of Cincinnati for the final NL wild card. "Were getting a few breaks now," manager Davey Johnson said. Overcoming adversity, too. Strasburg was scratched after experiencing forearm tightness during a throwing session Thursday in New York. Ohlendorf (4-0), who recently moved to the bullpen, stepped in and survived a shaky first inning to allow a run on five hits over five innings. "He made the pitches. Great effort," Johnson said. Ian Desmond had two hits and two RBIs, and Ryan Zimmerman (3 for 4) hit a solo homer and scored three runs for Washington. Denard Span singled, extending his hitting streak to 24 games. Kyle Kendrick (10-13) was charged with six runs on eight hits. "I didnt give us a chance to win, I didnt pitch deep into the game," Kendrick said. "Its been a rough second half." Kendrick has a 6.91 ERA since the All-Star break and hasnt won since August 6. Johnson said Strasburg will rest for a few days and is slated to start Sept. 19 against Miami. "Its not down where they did the Tommy John (surgery in 2010)," Johnson said before the game. "Its on the soft tissue on the top side of the forearm." The Nationals have clubbed 15 homers in their last five games. Zimmerman has nine of his 24 home runs in his last 11 games, while Ramos has four in his last six. Carlos Ruiz and Cody Asche had two hits apiece for Philadelphia, which scored first. Cesar Hernandez led off the game with a walk. With one out, Chase Utley singled him to third. Ruiz followed with an RBI single, but Ohlendorf struck out Darin Ruf and Asche to end the inning. "The strikeouts were big to get out of the inning," Ohlendorf said. "I had a really good fastball with a lot of life on it. I was getting some swings and misses with it, a lot of popups." Zimmerman singled in the bottom of the first. After Jayson Werth walked, Zimmerman took third on Harpers fly to right and scored on Desmonds infield single. Ramos led off the second with his 14th home run on a line drive into the visitors bullpen. Zimmerman made it 3-1 when he sent Kendricks 0-2 sinker into the same bullpen to start the third. Freddy Galvis led off the Phillies fourth with a hit to left. Galvis tried for a double and barely beat Harpers throw, but Steve Lombardozzis tag pushed his hand off the bag and he was called out. "Hes one of the better ones for sure," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "His speed getting to balls, whether theyre in the gap or down the line. And then his arm strength and his accuracy is some of the best youll see." Then in the sixth, Harper picked up his second assist and 12th of the season when he threw out Ruiz trying for a double. "I get fired up because it doesnt happen often, but its an adrenalin rush throwing guys out," Harper said. The Nationals chased Kendrick in the fifth. Desmond picked up his second infield single, this time with the bases loaded, to make it 4-1. With two outs and a 3-2 count, Ramos hit a hard grounder off the foot of reliever Luis Garcia. The ball deflected up into the air for an infield single as two runs scored. "Ramos hit the ball of the pitchers foot and it went about three stories high," Johnson said. "Nobody knew where it was and Bryce was running hard, that was great." NOTES: Domonic Brown (heel) pinch hit for Philadelphia in the ninth, his first appearance since Sept. 1st. Asche snapped an 0-for-10 skid with his single in the sixth. . The Nationals named outfielder Billy Burns their Minor League Player of the Year and right hander Taylor Jordan Minor League Pitcher of the Year. . Gio Gonzalez (10-6, 3.31) opposes Cole Hamels (7-13, 3.45) on Saturday. . Before the game, the Nationals held a ceremony to honour the victims and first responders of Sept. 11, 2001. That meant Peyton Manning had his front-line offence intact as the Denver Broncos began preparations in earnest for their opener against his former team, the Indianapolis Colts, on Sunday night. Welker donned his up-sized helmet and ran short routes during the 20-minute viewing period open to the media at the start of practice, He added a few minutes of extra work with rookie Cody Latimer afterward. With injury reports not required until Wednesday, coach John Fox was coy when asked how much work Welker did in between. "Hes still in the (concussion) protocol. Hes still exercising. I feel good about his progress. Well keep you posted," Fox said. Welker declined to talk with reporters on his way inside team headquarters after practice, saying he had to rush to a team function. His concussion in a preseason game against the Houston Texans was his third since Nov. 17. In a sign that his latest head injury wasnt as serious as last years pair of concussions in a three-week span, Welker ran a few routes in a pregame workout for starters who didnt play in the exhibition finale at Dallas on Thursday night. Welkers return to action leaves the Broncos with just two key players sidelined: linebacker Danny Trevathan (leg) and kicker Matt Prater (suspension). Key backups Ronnie Hillman and Kayvon Webster were limited in the early portion of practice four days after falling ill during the Broncos exhibition finale at Dallas. Welkers return to the lineup would allow the Broncos to keep burner Emmanuel Sanders on the outside and available to stretch the field by going deep along with Demaryius Thomas. Welker caught 73 passes for 778 yards and a career-high 10 TDs last season despite missing most of the final month. He returned for the playoffs and grabbed 18 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. His latest head injury came when he tried to duck following a catch over the middle and absorbed a helmet hit by D.J. Swearinger that sent his head recoiling off the ground. That drew a 15--yard penalty for Swearinger and the wrath of Manning.dddddddddddd The quarterback raced up to say some choice words to the swaggering safety after throwing a long TD pass to Sanders on the next play. The five-time MVP was whistled for the first taunting penalty of his career and was fined $8,268, money Manning called well spent. The NFL, meanwhile, deemed Swearingers hit legal. Mannings feistiness further galvanized the Broncos, who are trying to become an edgier team in their quest to get back to the Super Bowl and win it this time. Several starters who skipped the Super Bowl while rehabbing from injuries are back, including Mannings blindside protector, Ryan Clady, and defenders Von Miller, Chris Harris Jr., Rahim Moore, Derek Wolfe, Quinton Carter and Quanterus Smith. At the top of GM John Elways to-do list following Denvers dud against Seattle was to toughen up his defence -- yes, sort of like the Seahawks. So, he added DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward and Aqib Talib in free agency and Bradley Roby in the draft. Only three defenders who started in the Super Bowl are still starters seven months later: tackles Terrance Knighton and Sylvester Williams, and linebacker Nate Irving. Among Elways toughest cuts last weekend were defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson and safety Duke Ihenacho, who was snatched up by Washington. "Its a situation you want to be in, having to make a lot of tough decisions," Elway said. "This is by far the deepest team since Ive been here and the toughest decisions weve had since Ive been here." This should also be the toughest team hes had in Denver. And not just on defence. The offence has a new edge to it, too, as evidenced by Mannings feistiness. "Thats how we are," Talib said. "He was defending his teammate. Thats what hes about -- all of us." NOTES: Five Broncos were voted captains by their peers Monday: Manning, Thomas, Ware, Knighton and David Bruton. ... The Broncos filled out their practice squad by signing DE Zach Thompson, a rookie from Wake Forest who was in training camp with the Jets. ' ' '
